What's That Novel?

I need help. Really. It's driving me nuts, and search engines aren't helping, so... I need your help.
There's that book I read years ago (it was a loan from my [H]ex from Hell, and I can't ask him what it was), and I can't remember the title or the author  - well, otherwise, I wouldn't be blogging about that... of course.

So, it's science fiction.
It's about a man who finds something (I can't remember what - a machine? A lamp? A magical snail? That's in a complete blur) that allows him to make wishes/make dreams come true.
I can't remember what the first one is, but I think it was something silly and selfish.
He discovers that the 'wish time' gets reduced each time (if Wish #1 lasted for one day, Wish #2 lasts for one hour - or something like that).
At one point, the hero turns into a woman (because he was curious) and he lets his Asian dry-cleaner (or something) take her to bed (because he was curious).
In the end, he's left with a one second wish, and he grants everybody one wish, which leads to some odd situations.

Rings any bell????????????????????????????

Oh wow what a plot! sadly it rings no bells, and I am looking for one myself from the 1970's that I got for 10p in a bargain basket! got 3 then, and only remember one as the gods of balsagoth! which is fab and I still read, one got taken off me by my mum due to it being a big bit risque and well had a rude cover pic (wonder why I bought it at age 10ish!) and the third was about a scifi prison planet, mining jewels and the only way off was naked! (well it was the 70's) but this guy had a false hand and hid the gems in his lower arm, and it allowed him to get more gems in the 'acid' stuff on the planet! sadly lost book and have no idea what it was called! Good luck finding yours, have you tried looking through the likes of Wikipedia?

I've tried everything I could think of, and... nada. :(

Your plots sound good, too. Too bad your mum kept one of the books because of the cover.
I hope you can find yours, too!!

If this blog entry doesn't work, I'll ask my adorable town librarians when I go see them... but the sci-fi shelf is one of the smallest there.
