Silent Banker

Hello, dear Readers!

We've got a slight case of "We are not amused" going on.
Our Editor-in-chief, my (usually patient and sweet) cousin, sent the links about the (local equivalent of the) Senate and Home Office stating that she is right to our new contact at our bank (over a decade with them for both of us, and not a single problem!), and... nothing.

We do not know if he's angry about the Law lesson, if he's asking his superior what to do with the mean gal who's sending him official texts showing that the bank is ignoring the Law, or if he's doing his job and opening us an account so we can start our online activity.
Not a clue...

Since none of us is a fan of silence... I contacted another bank in the night, got an answer this morning, and handed the baby to Cousin Editor-in-chief. Now... we wait.

I'd like to officially declare here that it is exhausting to deal with people who aren't even competent at their jobs. The number of arrogant cavepeople trying to bully their way through life is quite tiring.

I'll keep you posted on our launch.

Love,
Dru

Nul n'est censé ignorer la loi

The title of this post, which basically says that all citizens are supposed to know the Law, is just a saying, as only specialists and Law professionals may know most of it - not all of it (only a Vulcan could do that!).
If people cannot know all the laws of their country of residence, it's no reason to wilfully ignore most of the laws (people should know the rights that protect them, and the limits they've got to abide by).
Why this legal post now?
Well... I've got Cousin Chris fuming, right next to me. You see, her main form of ID is a bit old, and she knows that she can't use it to leave the country, for example, but... the Sénat and the Ministère de l'Intérieur both declare that it is still valid to prove her identity as long as the photo looks like her (and it bloody does!). So what's the problem? Well, the bank she contacted (her bank - and mine, too! - the bank that can see everything we buy and pay, and where our money comes from) just told her that her ID's no longer valid, which is, according to the Sénat and the Ministère de l'Intérieur, not legal, as they're not above the Sénat and the Ministère de l'Intérieur.

So... banks can play with our money as if it were Monopoly money, and ignore the Law?
How delightful!
We all agree that we must NOT cave and bow to them, because that bank is ignoring the Law - and we know it, and we're going to remind them because we're looking for business partners who trust us (and those know they can trust us), not bullies who can treat us like crooks, liars, and potential thieves!
Even if we do have to go look elsewhere, and it postpones the opening of our e-bookstore, we're not going to do as the bank bullies want, and we're not going to potentially subject our lovely patrons to arrogant ignoramuses who think someone died and made them kings.

Now... I'd better go find something soothing for the team, the five of us are currently fuming like a volcano in a weird mood.

In Kafka-land

Dear Administrations,

would you please stop trying to give me an ulcer or a heart attack?

Sincerely,
Dru

My cousin, her mum, and I have spent last night attempting to read the additional bumph sent by our local "HM Revenue & Customs" (the IRS, if you're on the other side of the pond).
First... It's always written in North Korean (or in Romulan!).
And then, after picturing our publishing adventure closing before it even opened... we discovered that we're not concerned by the bumph they sent (our status is so rare - okay, and recent - that we're not on their map).
My cousin will have to go see them, explain (in veeeeeeeery simple words) what we do, give them the legal reference that concerns our status, and pray to Zeus that they acknowledge that we're right (otherwise they could ask us a pay a tax we cannot afford to pay).

We're trying to do everything by the book, and we're being probed, and investigated, and doubted (and generally not helped at all) even though we've done nothing to deserve that.
How do con-men go through these nets? Do they bulldoze and/or cajole their way though?
It's the third time we fear we might have to stop launching our own business. I hope it's the last time - and I hope we can go on...
Wish us luck?

'She's guilty!!!'

Preliminary note: I considered not posting this one, but the amount of sexism and victim-blaming I've read today is making me see red, so before I blow a fuse, I give you a growly post on a thorny topic...

I'm back home, and I'm angry... because I was silly enough to watch the news (I should stick to newspapers and Twitter; those can already make me growl, but usually, I don't get to put a face on plonkers saying stupid things).

So, there was this section about the death of a baby, killed by his violent and abusive father.

Allow me to yell this in red: WE MUST EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT ABUSE AND HOW TO HELP VICTIMS!!!

It was a complete festival of victim-blaming in that section:
- the neighbours: heard the shouts and the wife being beaten, but they did nothing and said nothing.
- the wife's mother and father-in-law: scolded the husband, and stopped going to see their daughter after the husband threatened them with a knife.
- the wife's father: he tried to protect her by telling her to leave, but now he blames her for staying.
- the various shop owners in town: saw the black eyes and bruises on the wife, but they "didn't want to get involved" because it was "none of their business".

When the wife got pregnant and her husband kept beating her, she went to the police.
What happened?
The husband got a few hours of community service. Awwwwwwwwwww!
Now, he's killed their baby.

I've just seen the Prosecutor declare calmly that the mother is somehow guilty as well because she didn't protect her child.
What about going to court six months ago and trying to get protection - and being left alone with a drinking sociopath?
What about being brainwashed into believing that she couldn't do a single thing without her husband (as per several shop owners' testimonies!)?
What about being another victim in this? Just a victim.

People who've never been abused can't imagine what it is. As I've already said before, my own mother is deeply convinced that I could have left my abuser in the wink of an eye, and that I should have been back to "life as it was before" five minutes after leaving him.
*snort* That's a pretty dream.
Abuse victims are in a form of hell on earth, and manipulation is a form of torture.
Yes, some mothers will react and leave when their companions start attacking their children. Some can do that, because that act of violence becomes a freeing trigger that helps them make a change.
Unfortunately, not all can do that, and the Earthlings should be told and taught that until they understand that abuse victims have their souls shackled and restrained.

I'm quite angry because what I saw made it clear that the wife is a victim, too, and the Prosecutor clearly felt contempt for her.
Her parents fled, the whole town turned deaf and blind, the police and the court gave a half-hearted slap on the wrist to her abuser, and now that the murderer she couldn't escape has killed her baby, she's probably going to end up in jail.
If I were the judge... I'd make sure she gets proper help, and I'd add the number of years the Law wants her to spend in jail to the sentence of the real culprit... but that's me, a Survivor who knows how quick and easy it is to fall for a predator.

Conspiracy Theory (May Contain a Dose of Common Plonker)

Allow me to start this with banking woes (you'll see it's convoluted, but it weirdly makes sense).
Once more, I'm dealing with banking plonkers who are abusing the Law because they think no one is going to pay attention or check what they say.
I do understand that the UE is trying to take collective measures in order to prevent funds to be sent to terrorists and to avoid the average money laundering, but... there is a sub-part to that law that says that they're allowed to work case by case and decide who is potentially a threat.

Just today, I've seen a banker refuse a retiree to open a new account (well, it took them a frigging month to react and notice that there was a "problem") for a stupid (oh... and incidentally just plain illegal) reason.
In my book, it's just that the bank manager doesn't have the guts to allow the opening of the account because that biped had decided to follow the main rule (which is incidentally wrong on that head here, according to two official sources - but never mind that detail).
It's utterly stupid. With exactly the same "legal" situation, the same kind of account was opened in another bank a few months ago.
That retiree isn't planning to start a live remake of Saving Grace or to do anything illegal; it's just about not having all the eggs in the same basket...
Well, that bank has lost one client - and me. And once I've moved, I'm going to send an icy letter to the highest plonker I can find in that bank to tell it that its subordinates are robots who can't think by themselves (all the more since there is a bloody loophole!!!).

I'm about to make a sexist remark, but the banker who accepted to use the loophole was a man; the one who didn't is a woman (and Merlin! Was she limited and patronizing! Coming from someone sending a retiree packing, that was a bit rich!).
Just because that girl has made me waste time, as I worked to prove that I was right, and she was wrong... and because moving my account is going to make me waste more time, this is war.

Our contact in the stupid branch pointed out that the manager wasn't there to give the green light.
*fake gasp*
Do you mean that the rest of that branch is on hold when the boss isn't there? Crikey! The manager must be quite something!
Apparently, they've never heard of delegating duties (or using their brains, mind you). Idiotic sheeple.

It's strangely things like that that make me want to believe in most conspiracy theories. Yes, I did write 'want to'. Because I'd rather have the people at the helm be cold-hearted manipulators, who plan wars years ahead, make deals with the enemy in secret and take us all for slaves that they can use as they please because... Well, the alternative is that they're as limited, stupid, idiotic as the gal at the bank, and they muddle along as clumsily as they could.
It may be silly, but I prefer dealing with heartless people with excellent brains than with the average plonker elected by chance and vaguely coping with everything.

Then again, if most sheeple are representative of the selection of bipeds on earth, perhaps there are only lucky plonkers. Perhaps there are no conspiracy theories, just dire situations created by the empty skulls of inadequate idiots who associate with other idiots who are incapable of doing anything correctly...

Dear Universe, I really do hope we're being manipulated. If so, that's awful, but the alternative is just too scary!

Whatever Happened to Common Decency?

Two things.

Let’s begin with something that has absolutely no connection with me.
Right now, some fishwrap editors have bought nasty photos of a young woman because… because she married into a famous family, and they all have the feeling that they own her because of her new surname.
I know they’d never answer me, but I’d like to know how they’d react if they were bullied and hunted the way they track and abuse their victims.
Same thing for the bipeds who buy the publications where stolen photos are published. Don’t they have a life? Don’t they have something better to do? Seriously, I hadn’t noticed that there’s peace on Earth and no children and animals dying so that people can justify being nosey about what their neighbours do. Silly me! [Where’s the sarcasm font when you need it???]
It’s seeing the gossip-mongering mentality of the “cave”, of the “village”, being blown at the speed of light in the media and on the Internet – and it’s not pretty.

In the same category, I was a bit shocked to see the lack of respect that’s rampant on the net.
I’ll keep focussing on this story.
Even if people are not fans of the Royal family, it’d be nice if they showed a minimum of respect. But it seems that a lot of people were raised in barns by illiterate beasts.
I’ve seen people mention the husband as “William” (it was a huge minority); mostly, he was called “Prince William”.
Well… How was the charming Duchess of Cambridge referred to? Go on, make a guess… “Kate” or, even better, “#Kate”. Did they all go to school with her that they can allow themselves to be so familiar? A few might have, but the rest of the planet hasn’t.
So, we have:
-         arrogant thieves paparazzi taking pictures of a young woman staying with friends (seriously, with a normal camera, you wouldn’t get a clear photo of the first line of trees, so the bathing suit of the young lady would be out of the question)
-         plonkers working in magazines and newspapers buying the photos in order to make money whilst abusing the young woman’s rights.
-         a collection of heartless bipeds interested in the photos because they think that the fact that the young woman is now famous makes her their property (last I checked, slavery has been abolished centuries ago in the UK).
-         various people referring to the male element of the couple with a modicum of respect, whilst they treat the female element as inferior in that couple (and it was a tad disappointing when the BBC joined the disrespectful bunch and used “#Kate” in most of their tweets last weekend).
-         a small proportion of bullies who approve and are cheering (I even caught one “she brought it on herself”. How?! By being alive and on Earth?! Twats!).

I know it’s none of my business, but if I knew someone – anyone – hunted by photographers and vilified for trying to protect himself, or herself, I’d stand by that person.

Incidentally (karmically?), something happened today.
My mother moved far from me, and today, she informed me that some local group where she now lives has sent a leaflet to the village (and probably the whole area). In that leaflet, there’s a photo of my mother. Since she’s not one of their members, you can imagine her surprise.
She phoned the group, and after being transferred higher and higher, the second-in-command had the nerve to tell her that as long as she wasn’t “directly looking at the camera”, they didn’t need to ask for her authorization to publish the photo.
All good, except that…………. *drumroll, please* …………. That decerebrated idiot is either incompetent in law, or a pathological liar – and I honestly don’t know which.
You see, the thing, where my mother lives now, is that there is a law to protect people – everybody, from my mother to the Duchess of Cambridge – and to guarantee that it’s only after signing an agreement that any photo can be published.

Cherry on the cake? My mother lives in France, and she and the Duchess of Cambridge are protected by the same law (this is not the kind of sentence I ever thought I’d type!). Some will object that the duchess is a public figure, but... back to "how would you react if you were the one hunted 24/7?".
A president at a museum opening, an actor at a premiere, a princess visiting a school... fair game. But after "work", all the public figures deserve privacy - because they are not public properties.
The plonkers who published the photos of the duchess know the laws (they’ve been sued in enough courts to know) and the idiot that stressed my mother knows, or should know better, but they don’t care.
What’s sad is that the duchess will win in court, but she shouldn’t have to fight to be allowed shreds of privacy. She may be a public figure, but she’s not a property.
What’s awful is that even a small fish like my mother can find herself in a situation to have to defend her right to privacy.
No one would have to fight for that right if some bipeds knew the laws and abode by them. And it would also help if most people didn’t put their curious noses where they don’t belong.

To conclude, I hope the Duchess of Cambridge will manage to start something that will stop the fishwraps and mosquitoes (because those plonkers have been running wild for way too long).
I also hope that my mother will phone the stupid second-in-command, too, in order to rub that idiot’s nose in her mistake – just for fun, because she highly deserves it.

P.S.: even if you do not approve of royal family members, of presidents, of... anyone, if you haven’t been raised by wolves, being polite isn’t going to make your tongue fall to the floor. It’s not quantum mechanics to be polite and use proper protocol.
Perhaps my education was too good… but I don’t think that common decency is too much to ask.
